Overview & Highlights

Nestled in the charming village of Higham, Joe’s Heart of Higham is a delightful coffee shop that has quickly become a beloved local gem. Located at 8 School Lane, this cozy spot combines the comforting appeal of a traditional bakery with the warmth of a neighborhood café, creating a welcoming hub for both locals and visitors passing through Rochester.

What truly sets Joe’s Heart of Higham apart is its unwavering commitment to quality and freshness, evident in every bite. Customers rave about their breakfasts, with hearty, well-cooked dishes that elevate classic British fare. From the perfectly crispy bacon and succulent sausages to the generously filled granary sandwiches stuffed with smoked salmon and cream cheese, the food bursts with wholesome, satisfying flavors. One guest described their large English breakfast paired with a comforting pot of tea and even an indulgent Oreo milkshake as the ultimate value for money experience — all served in an inviting, tastefully decorated dining room upstairs that offers a relaxed atmosphere to unwind.

The friendly and attentive staff amplify the experience, making every visit feel personal and warm. Even though the current owners have only been there a few weeks, many patrons remarked that the staff’s professionalism and enthusiasm exceed expectations, maintaining a smooth transition from the previous owners while infusing new life into the café. This approachable service leaves visitors feeling truly valued and eager to return.

Beyond the savory menu, Joe’s Heart of Higham proudly stands as a bakery first and foremost. Freshly baked bread and cakes are available daily, tempting customers with homemade sweetness. While the cakes receive mostly positive remarks, some guests have noticed variations in freshness, suggesting a small area for improvement to match the otherwise stellar quality. Even so, the bakery’s offerings provide a comforting, authentic homemade touch that complements the coffee shop’s overall cozy vibe perfectly.

The café also scores highly on convenience, with plenty of parking and clean, accessible facilities onsite, making it an ideal pit stop before a countryside walk or a casual morning meetup. For those who appreciate a relaxing space to catch up with friends or simply enjoy quality food and drink, Joe’s Heart of Higham strikes the perfect balance of comfort, flavor, and friendliness.

In essence, Joe’s Heart of Higham is not just a coffee shop — it’s a testament to what a local eatery should feel like: personal, genuine, and delicious. Whether you’re looking for a nourishing breakfast, a satisfying lunch, or a warm place to savor freshly baked goods with a well-made coffee, this spot is poised to become your new favorite retreat in Higham.

Great breakfast, food quality is amazing, this is definitely our new favourite place to visit. Everyone is super friendly. I can't wait to try the cakes

Had delicious smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich, on granary bread, couldn't believe how stuffed the sandwich was and just for £5 great taste and value

We don't live in the area and searched for a breakfast place when driving through. Super friendly staff, who said they've only been open for five weeks (you wouldn't know it!) as they'd taken over from the old owner. We ordered a specific breakfast as are mainly eating protein (no bread, from this place which is also a bakery, sadly). The bacon and sausages were definitely not from a budget range. The bacon was large, and thick. Everything was delicious. Good luck to this new business!

Best cooked breakfast I’ve had in a while, lovely ingredients, very well cooked, absolutely spot on, new favourite eatery for me and Debbie

One of the best breakfasts I've ever had! Quality ingredients, pleasant staff and a relaxed atmosphere. My first visit of many more to come! Top marks

Stopped off at this place before a walk for a bit of lunch. Nice cosy place with seating upstairs for about 30 People. Nicely decorated with enormous TV . Staff were friendly and food was reasonably priced and tasty. It is also a bakery if you want to grab a loaf or some cakes while you are there .

Had a large English breakfast today, pot of tea.. chicken mayo crusty roll and an Oreo milkshake all for under £20. Sat upstairs in their lovely decorated dining room. Toilets available on site and friendly staff. Plenty of parking space. Will definitely visit again. Value for money was great, previous owners were a tad expensive.

Breakfast is always lovely and fresh very good quality too. We always enjoy going for a meal here. The only thing I’d say is whenever we’ve had cake in or to take away which I’ve done often (sliced cake) it’s been very very dry like it’s been left out for a long time or from the day before, which is such a shame considering it’s a bakery first and foremost. Would be nice to see the cakes be as good as the fresh bread as the bread is ever so good and fresh!
